Rebooting the Cynefin™ Practitioner Foundations course

17 May 2019

Over the previous few months, we have reworked the Cynefin™ Practitioner Foundations training. The content has been simplified and is practice focused using Sharon Bowman’s “Training from the back of the room” method to structure each topic. We have phased out most of our slides in favour of flip charts that the trainer and the participants construct together.

The new course structure has been piloted five times by now and the feedback is positive. Participants are very engaged and active, and leave with confidence in their ability to apply what they have learnt.

The new Cynefin™ Practitioner Foundations course is being rolled out and the transition period will continue for a few more months. Starting from Q3-2019, we expect all Foundations courses to follow the new structure. We should mention that successful completion of the Cynefin™ Practitioners Foundations course will be honoured the same regardless of when and which version of the course you have taken. Retaking the Foundations course is useful if you want to refresh and strengthen your personal learning., but we do recommend the advanced courses, masterclasses and retreats for Foundations graduates.

We believe that good trainers are important, and we want to make sure they have the right level of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, training skills and community contribution for each training programme. We have established an initial group of 12 Authorised Cynefin™ Trainers and will give them wide latitude when it comes to scheduling, selling and delivering training, as well as extending the general Foundations course into specific niches.  In parallel, we will be developing advanced and application-specific courses, and are looking for feedback on what we should prioritise.

We also have a group of Cynefin™ Trainer Candidates who are busy co-training and learning the updated course structure, and another group lined up for their first co-trainings. The pipeline is full at the moment. We are currently prioritizing highly the candidates who are almost ready to graduate — as they become authorized they free up space in the pipeline for new candidates, and will create more capacity for co-trainingWe expect the pipeline situation to improve in the second half of this year.

Together with our network of Authorised Cynefin™ Trainers, we intend to explore new niches, combining the Foundations with a specific industry domain or interest area such as complex facilitation, agile software development, social networks, healthcare or leadership. There will be variations of the Foundations course coming up, and also new courses.
