Aiden Choles South Africa
I value membership in the Cognitive Edge Network, it anchors my consulting in a passionate global community & promotes complexity thinking in organisational change and effectiveness.

I’m Aiden Choles, and together with Sonja Blignaut we run The Narrative Lab in South Africa. We consult with a range of industries, most notably banking, mining, research and NGOs. Across these industries and segments we've completed numerous successful projects using the Cognitive Edge Methods. I’ve been accredited with Cognitive Edge since 2006, and value my membership in the CE Network because it has rooted my consulting in a global community of people passionate about complexity, and the support I find in the Network helps promote the thinking and approaches necessary for a complex approach to organisational change and effectiveness.

I’m Aiden Choles, a Cognitive Edge Practitioner and Accredited Network Member in South Africa since February 2006. In 2007 I started, alongside Sonja Blignaut, a consultancy called The Narrative Lab that uses the Cynefin Framework as well as associated Cognitive Edge methods as a core foundation. We consult with a range of industries, most notably banking, mining, research and NGOs.

I have valued my membership in the Network because it has rooted my consulting in a global community of people passionate about complexity. The support in the Network is valuable in promoting the thinking and approaches embedded in a complex approach to organisational change and effectiveness.

I remember one project where we used a Future Backwards in a Not-for-profit organisation within the education sector. The organisation were interested in capturing their recent history and perspectives that team members had on their vision and future. The exercise went well, except that the group could not visualise an extreme Hell. Despite multiple disruptive techniques, there just seemed to be a block when it came to identifying what could go wrong in their business. This was an opportune time to debrief the process with the team and reflect on the reality of risks to the business and how they may have bought into an invincible (of sorts) dominant story.
