Going beyond Cynefin 101 – Johannesburg, South Africa

The Cynefin Framework has become a popular mainstay in most conversation these days – walk into any IT, Agile or Management Conference, and you will find one or more presentation which discusses the use of the framework, and the insights it provides. However, most common understandings of Cynefin and its use as a sense-making framework barely scratch the surface.

What does it really mean when we say that it is a sense-making framework? How do we make use of it to develop actionable plans, and make decisions on strategy? How do we use it to stimulate innovation?

Join us for this one-day session to dig deeper into the Cynefin framework – how to apply it in organisations; how to make better decisions, and how it can help shape how we organise and communicate.

What you will learn:

The Cynefin framework has subtleties and nuances that are not immediately obvious to the casual reader. This one-day session provides a deep immersion into Cynefin and its use, beyond the fundamentals. Building on the basics of cognitive complexity, and the Harvard Business Review article, we will explore uses of the framework, accompanied by facilitated workshop activities and tools that have been used in organisations as diverse as the European Commission, multinational telecoms companies and R&D departments of FMCG companies to bring diverse teams together in pursuit of corporate objectives.

Who it is for:

For anyone who has heard about Cynefin, and who wants to develop a deeper understanding of how to utilise this sense-making tool to deal with new complexities. Cynefin has been identified as a key sense-making tool for those working in constantly-evolving, dynamic environments, dealing daily with uncertainty and risk. Whether you work in an organisation navigating intractable problems, or are a consultant looking to include Cynefin and complexity principles into your toolkit, this session is suitable for you..

What we will cover:

This session will include a little theory, some hands-on exercises for practise, and discussions about previous real-world applications and case studies:

  • Types of Systems and their attributes
  • Cynefin – as a sense-making tool
  • How to build an authentic Cynefin framework with your own data
  • Cynefin dynamics – what they are, and how and when to apply
