Cognitive Edge is focused on rejuvenating management practices to better equip organisations when addressing intractable problems or seizing new opportunities in uncertain and complex situations. Where traditional approaches have failed to deliver success, Cognitive Edge techniques enable the emergence of fresh and insightful solutions seen from multiple perspectives.

Cognitive Edge solutions, comprised of open source methods, original research and the Cognitive Edge SenseMaker™ Software Suite, are delivered through the Cognitive Edge Network. The Cognitive Edge Network is a widely dispersed, cohesive Network of experienced professionals in private and public sector organisations from diverse disciplines with deep-rooted experience in both business and science. It includes academics and practitioners, in house and commercial consultants. Membership of the Network is attained through participation in an Accreditation programme.

The Cognitive Edge SenseMaker™ Software Suite provides a set of tools designed to enable informed decision making in organisations using both structured and unstructured data in a common environment. The Suite is fully integrated with a coherent body of formal methods is the outcome of several years of research into human based organizational complexity, sensemaking, decision making, knowledge sharing and narrative.

Making Sense ... Gaining Cognitive Edge (two-day accreditation)

What is accreditation

Anyone can attend a Cognitive Edge Accreditation programme to gain a deeper understanding of the Cognitive Edge methods. Attendance provides the option of then joining the Cognitive Edge Network as an accredited practitioner.

Benefits of accreditation

  • Deeper exposure to Cognitive Edge methods
  • Opportunity to join the Cognitive Edge Network
  • Practitioners are invited to regular gatherings of the Network
  • Accredited practitioners in the Network will be able to receive commission on selling SenseMaker™ software.  A separate course is offered for designing and delivering SenseMaker™ projects .

Outline of the course

The two day workshop is focused on groups and individuals that are interested in developing internal capabilities with Cognitive Edge methods for their organisations. The methods effectively provide internal or front-line employee groups an ability to develop their own solutions to challenging organisational issues.

Areas of application include:

  • Weak signal threat detection related to markets, competitors, work environment changes (i.e. safety) and entrained or patterned thinking
  • The use of dissent, diversity, and perspective shifting for improved innovation, strategy, and leadership development
  • Mapping organizational culture and initiating change through self-descriptive awareness
  • Improving the connectivity of organizations with the application of social network stimulation
  • Capturing knowledge from retiring employees in a way that retained staff find useful

Principles of accreditation

  • The accreditation process is voluntary. Once attending a Cognitive Edge Accreditation course run by an approved Network practitioner, or a previous Cynefin Certification Approved course, a person can register. There are no exams.
  • Registration is completed by following the applicable step below. A new, publicly visible practitioner profile will be created that allows capture of training details, project records and related confirmation from clients and other practitioners in the Network, with a record of methods used, and the basis (if any) of mentoring on early use.
  • A legal ‘Practitioner Agreement’ will be agreed to in the process, relating to quality control, use of the Cognitive Edge brand, client confidentiality and ethics.
  • The practitioner profiles are used for quality control (by making claims of experience transparent) and to facilitate connections within the Network. Practitioners are requested to quote the reference for their profile page when proposing to clients, to encourage its use as a validation mechanism.
  • Upon entering details of a client engagement, the client may be contacted by Cognitive Edge for ‘yes / no’ verification of the details. If the client does not verify the account, then the client engagement record will be removed.
  • Accreditation training is provided by a limited number of approved practitioners from the Network.
  • Mentoring is a value adding service that may or may not be offered by the Network practitioner offering accreditation in your geography. Newly accredited practitioners can also seek mentoring from experienced Network practitioners, who can be found through their profiles on the site.  Mentoring on first use of methods is recommended and its use will form a part of the practitioner profile.
